This conference marked the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the
Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar. It also took place exactly 10 years after the
previous Aspen Winter conference on radio pulsars ("Millisecond Pulsars: A
Decade of Surprise"). Many significant advances have occurred in this field
during the past decade, including the introduction of fundamentally new
theoretical paradigms for the formation and evolution of compact objects in
binaries as well as countless discoveries by radio astronomers of new
binary and millisecond pulsar systems that have challenged many accepted
models. Some of the main topics that were discussed at this meeting
included new observations of binary radio pulsars in the field and in
globular clusters (especially the new double pulsar system J0737-3039A and B), neutron star
formation and evolution in binaries, relativistic binaries and gravitational
waves, 'black widow' and isolated millisecond pulsars, planets around
neutron stars, physics of accretion onto neutron stars and pulsar
recycling, and related studies of neutron star X-ray binaries including
millisecond X-ray pulsars and ultracompact systems. |
