LODGING:

For this conference, we have reserved a limited number of rooms at The Aspen Meadows, which is a luxury hotel within the same complex as the Physics Center and Aspen Institute. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATION by returning the reservation form: MS Word   PDF. Their phone number is 1-800-452-4240 or 970-544-7803 (Becky Rosser), and their fax number is 970-544-7810. Please mention this conference and make your reservation as soon as possible, since there are a limited number of rooms reserved. They will require a credit card deposit to hold your room. The cost per night is $201 for a single room and $131 per person sharing a double room, plus taxes. These rates include breakfast and dinner and gratuities. Friday and Saturday night rates are $165 per night plus tax, single occupancy, and $97.50 per person plus tax per night, double occupancy; these rates include room and breakfast only. However, because of a special event that weekend, the rate for Saturday night, February 12, increases sharply, to $315.

If you are sharing a room and would like to request a particular roommate, please do so at the time you make your reservation. The rooms are suites, with the bedroom separate from the living room, so two people can share in relative privacy. In order to get the shared room rate for all nights, your dates must match those of your roommate. Friday and Saturday night rates include room and breakfast only. The rate for that night will be $97.50 per person plus tax.

There is a 50% deposit of room and tax due at booking to guarantee reservation. You may cancel up to 30 days before the conference with no penalty other than a $35 cancellation fee. After that, you will be charged for the total cost of your room.

ARRIVAL AT THE MEADOWS:

If you arrive by air, you may call the Aspen Meadows from the airport at 925-4240 for complimentary shuttle service. If you arrive by ground transportation, their address is 845 Meadows Road.

If you arrive by car, drive North on either 7th or 8th Street, and you will be directed to the hotel. Both breakfast and dinner are served at the Meadows, and the scientific sessions are held at the Aspen Institute's Paepcke Auditorium, a 5-10 mins walk.

REGISTRATION AND WELCOME RECEPTION:

Registration and a welcome reception will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 PM on Sunday evening at the Aspen Meadows hotel, which is located a short walk Northwest of the Physics Center. Refreshments and a light supper will be served. If you arrive after this time, you may register at Paepcke Auditorium the following morning. The registration fee for the conference is $300.

COMPUTER FACILITIES:

High-speed internet access is available in all guest rooms at The Meadows. The Aspen Center for Physics has 4 public workstations available running Solaris 2.8. They all have a web browser (netscape) and an editor (emacs) installed, as well as TeX, a postscript previewer, ssh, and some other simple utilities. They are not capable of any serious computing, and you should restrict your sessions to 10 minutes to allow everyone an opportunity to use them.

Our network bandwidth is limited---please be considerate and avoid any bandwidth intensive activities (or at least do them late at night when demand is low). During the day, please restrict to physics related activities. There is no access to the ACP network from off-campus. All offices have network access, and there are two printers available for use. Wireless connections are also available in Smart Hall.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

The scientific program has been planned for early morning and late afternoon sessions, which allows participants to have ample time for discussions or recreational activities.

The sessions will be held in Paepcke Auditorium at the Aspen Institute, which is fully equipped with laptop and overhead projectors. There will be two sessions each day: a morning session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, and an afternoon session from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. You will receive a final program at registration.

RECREATION:

The Meadows has a lovely health spa on site, including a lap pool and jacuzzi. The elevation of the town is nearly 8,000 feet, so consider the effects of the altitude during your first few days.

Aspen offers a wide variety of Winter sports, including downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, and walking. Equipment can be rented for all activities, and instruction is also available. We have obtained ski lift tickets at a rate of $41 per day. You may purchase them at the Center during your stay. If you need them before Sunday evening, please let us know by the Thursday before arrival, and we will arrange to have them for you at the Meadows upon check-in. Also, if you plan to rent skis, we will direct you to the shops that will give you a discount if you mention the conference.
