Astronomy and Astrophysics at Northwestern

Directions from O'Hare or Midway Airport
After you have retrieved your bags, call American Taxi at 1-847-255-9600 (operator) or 1-800-244-1177 (automated; you'll have to enter the phone number of your hotel as destination, and you must know the number of the terminal where you are located). The reason for using this company is that it is based on the North Shore. Most of the other cabs prowling around the airport are Chicago cabs and they do not know the Evanston area, so they will charge a much higher rate to go to Evanston AND they will probably get lost on the way! The cab ride from O'Hare to Evanston normally takes about 30 minutes (a lot longer during rush hours), from Midway about 45 minutes.

Directions to Physics Department
After leaving the Hilton Garden Inn hotel, walk east on Clark Street (Chili's is at the corner), pass underneath the “L” tracks, and go past the small park on your left (from the Orrington Hotel, simply walk North on Orrington and turn right on Clark). One full block past the end of the park, you will arrive at Chicago Ave. Make a left (turn North) on Chicago Ave. After one block, Chicago merges with Sheridan Rd. (you will see the main entrance gate to campus on your right). Walk North on Sheridan Rd until you see the Technological Institute (aka “Tech”) building, a large stone building with a flat roof, on the right (East) side of Sheridan Rd. When facing the main entrance, enter through the first door you see on the right (F) wing.

Directions to Dearborn Observatory
After leaving the Hilton Garden Inn hotel, walk east on Clark Street (Chili's is at the corner), pass underneath the “L” tracks, and go past the small park on your left (from the Orrington Hotel, simply walk North on Orrington and turn right on Clark). One full block past the end of the park, you will arrive at Chicago Ave. Make a left (turn North) on Chicago Ave. After one block, Chicago merges with Sheridan Rd. At this intersection, cross the street toward the campus' main gate, and proceed North on what is now Sheridan Rd. Turn right on Tech Drive, the small road on your right located just past the Ford Engineering Design Center, and just before the Technological Institute building. If you reach the Noyes Steet stoplight, you have gone too far. Just before the second building-to-building bridge, make a right up the stairs, and follow the path to Dearborn Observatory on your left.

Parking for Visitors
If you need to park on campus during your visit, you will need a visitor's parking permit. Please contact Carrie Middleton or call: 847-491-7650 at least two weeks before your visit and she should be able to mail you a permit. Note that very few parking lots near the central campus area allow visitor permits: see the campus parking map.
