Department Chair, Professor
Michael Schmitt and his research group study processes initiated by the collisions of very high energy protons and anti-protons. As members of the CDF Collaboration at Fermilab, they have access to data which directly probe the smallest distance scales of any experiment in the world. Their research emphasizes the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, as well as searches for new particles and new phenomena. They have measured the production of W andZ bosons which mediate the weak interactions — this is the gateway to the exciting studies of the top quark and, possibly, the discovery of theHiggs boson. They have also searched for new particles in the high mass spectrum of muon pairs.
