CIERA stands with our fellow community members against racist policing at Northwestern. We reaffirm our commitment to racial equity and justice in higher education and society as a whole. We recognize that racial inequities, including in policing, place our marginalized students and colleagues at risk. Racial disparities in the experiences of Northwestern students, faculty, and staff have long been recognized, and deserve prompt action. We are disappointed in University leadership for not honoring their past commitments to address racism at our university, many of which are outlined in the Department of African American Studies letter of October 15. We call on Northwestern leadership to prioritize these actions and for constructive discussion among all parties. Further, we urge everyone in the Northwestern community to educate ourselves about issues of racial injustice and commit to effecting positive change.
