Announcing CIERA Assistant Director Tarraneh Eftekhari

We are pleased to announce our new Assistant Director, Dr. Tarraneh Eftekhari

Tarraneh joined CIERA in 2021 as a CIERA Postdoctoral Fellow after completing her PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Harvard University. In 2022, she became a NASA Hubble Einstein Fellow and has since served as the Principal Investigator (PI) of multiple high-impact research projects, in addition to co-advising Northwestern graduate students. Tarraneh’s research spans a wide range of astrophysical transients, including fast radio bursts, superluminous supernovae and tidal disruption events. Her work leverages observations across the electromagnetic spectrum to answer key fundamental questions about the physics driving these energetic phenomena. Tarraneh’s contributions have significantly advanced our understanding of astrophysical transients, including fast radio bursts (FRBs).

In her new role as Assistant Director, Tarraneh will oversee development efforts, public communications, and outreach. She will also lead the annual Responsible Conduct of Research training for postdoctoral researchers and serve as a standing member of the CIERA Executive Committee. A portion of her time will be dedicated to continuing her independent research.

Welcome Tarraneh!

With Tarraneh’s arrival, we also extend our farewell to Professor Shane Larson, who held CIERA’s Associate Director role with great dedication. Shane has taken on an exciting new position as Professor of Physics and Director of Integrated Engineering and Applied Science Projects at Clarkson University. We thank Shane for his many contributions and wish him all the best in this next chapter.
