A Legacy of Excellence in Astronomy

Astronomy at Northwestern has a long history, starting with Dearborn Observatory in the 1800s and followed by the Lindheimer Astrophysical Center on the shore of Lake Michigan on Northwestern’s main campus from 1966 – 1995.  Astronomy research at Northwestern continues to push boundaries at the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics.

The Lindheimer Fellowship

The Lindheimer Postdoctoral Fellowship has been an important part of the astronomy legacy at Northwestern since 1979. Lindheimer Fellows are hosted by CIERA and are key independent contributors to CIERA’s innovative research community. The title is given very selectively and only one astronomer can hold the Lindheimer Fellowship at a time.
