CIERA Journal Club is a time for CIERA members, from postdocs to graduate students to faculty, to meet and discuss the latest papers on the ArXiv/astro-ph.
Ongoing for most of CIERA’s history, Journal Club takes place weekly throughout the academic year. All members of the CIERA research community are welcome to attend. Meetings cover a wide variety of topics and may also include brief talks by CIERA visiting researchers or Astrophysics Seminar speakers.
For attendees, Journal Club is an opportunity to be in the same room with people – from all corners of CIERA – who work in fields they might not otherwise interact with. For students and postdocs, it is also a chance to practice valuable science communication skills, such as effectively discussing areas outside of their own specialties with fellow astronomers.
While the exact structure of Journal Club varies each year as organizers come in and out, its heart remains the same, as a low-pressure way of coming together as a community to talk about science.
